I am a New York City-based ceramic artist who creates wheel-thrown, one-of-a-kind pieces, primarily in stoneware and porcelain. I am particularly drawn to a traditional Korean white porcelain vessel known as a moon jar, I find the challenge of throwing such a form rewarding. As a medium, pottery requires both discipline and delicacy. With every new piece that I throw, I look for the balance between methodology and intuition.
I am inspired by the relationship between time and materiality. I seek for the impact of time on matter in the occurring marks and textures that are formed naturally through processes like erosion, decay and sedimentation. I am intrigued by these effects in both urban and rural environments that have been modified by the cycles of nature.
My works are formally minimal and have natural earth tones, highlighting their subtle surface textures. I create my textures by using slip, underglazes and natural pigments made of hand processed raw materials collected from different areas to give each piece the unique visual depth and character of a timeworn object.
